Thus, in 1979, the first thousand bottles with their own label were born. Since then, the long journey began in search of the perfect balance between innovation and tradition, trying to make the most of the potential of the area, the hills of Spello and Assisi, where the company’s approximately 25 hectares of vineyards are located.

Wines

There are currently five wines produced: Assisi Rosso DOP, Assisi Grechetto DOP, Villa Fidelia Bianco IGP, Villa Fidelia Rosso IGP and Villa Fidelia Passito IGP. Over the past decade, production has stabilized at around 200,000 bottles a year.

Since 1998 the company has made use of the prestigious oenological and agronomic consultancy of Riccardo Cotarella. At about 500 meters above sea level, on the edge of the Monte Subasio Park, the company has about 2,000 olive trees, the Moraiolo cultivar, used for the production of an excellent extra virgin olive oil.

The Vineyards

The company’s approximately 25 hectares of vineyards are located on the hills of Spello and Assisi, all of which are part of the DOC Assisi. The gradual process of renewal of the vineyards has led to a more rational and quality viticulture thanks to the high density of planting and the “spurred cordon” training system, which allow the control of the load of buds and, consequently, of the productivity some plants.

For the production of superior quality wines, the bunches are thinned out at the beginning of veraison, so that the average production is around 1 kg of grapes per vine. Currently among the cultivated vines there is the autochthonous Grechetto of which the planting of the G5 clone has been preferred, slightly less productive, but with more character and typicality.

Chardonnay, whose grapes are used for the Villa Fidelia Bianco, it was planted in land about 500 meters above sea level, on the slopes of Mount Subasio.

As regards the red grapes, particular attention is paid to the Merlot of which, during the renewal of the vineyards, a clone was selected and propagated from an old vineyard owned by the Sportolettis for about fifty years, which has one of the company’s trump cards. Even for Sangiovese it was preferred to plant new clones, less productive but richer in polyphenols; likewise for Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc a clone from an old vineyard owned by the Sportolettis for about fifty years was selected and propagated, which over time has proved to be one of the company’s trump cards.
